Okay. I think I've stopped squealing long enough to write this!
Or maybe not, but I'm going to type through it anyhow...
I have an agent! What's even better? I've been fan-girling her for MONTHS! MONTHS, I tell you! Who might it be? The very sought-after Jamie Bodnar Drowley with Inklings Literary. Now, if I say that enough times tonight, it might actually feel real in the morning.
Maybe I'll just write it on a note card and leave it next to the bed, you know... like that girl in 50 First Dates. "Hi, your name is Rebecca Yarros, and you have Jamie as an agent!" That's better than coffee. (Which says a LOT.)
So how did this awesomeness come into being?
The dreaded query.
My husband laughs at me when I bring my cell phone to bed. I'm a night-owl by nature, up until 1 or 2 a.m. every night, and you bet your behind I'm checking my email before I turn out the light. He used to say, "What? In case an agent emails you at 1 a.m. because they can't wait until morning?"
One night I leave the phone downstairs. I come down the next morning, and WHAT is that in my inbox at 1 a.m.?
A FULL request from Jamie, who I know is uber-selective about her clients!!! I immediately send back my full manuscript and commence the 30-second happy dance!
Then I tell my husband that he's wrong, and agents DO request things in the middle of the night. He no longer mocks the cell phone by the side of the bed. Now, the wait begins.
I became a bit over-zealous on the twitter-stalking. I mean, not that I could say what she had for breakfast or anything, but I kept looking to see when she was reading manuscripts and begging for the slightest hint. Waiting is torture, and lucky for me, it was only about 7 weeks.
Then, on Friday, I get this email... SHE WANTS TO CALL ME!!!!
This induced an immediate panic. I can be wickedly socially awkward. So we set a time, and I spend all of Saturday basically....
I try to choke down some dinner, but let's face it...
So she calls, and has a Colorado Springs (my home town) cell number from when she used to live there! Talk about Fate. A few minutes of mutual adoration of the Rocky Mountains, and East Coast Autumn and I'm sold. ;)
But then, she gives the most amazing compliments about loving my manuscript and in the middle of her love-fest throws in: "I'm offering you representation."
OH MY SQUEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!
Of course, I'm trying to remain totally cool and professional, really aiming for:
And really? Well.... I'm more like:
She wants me! This is my very first novel, and one I wrote just for the fun of writing, so I never planned on this moment happening. Oh, but it's AWESOME! So Jamie gives me some time to consult the other parties that have the manuscript and we hang up. It's now time for another 30-second dance party. Or longer. Maybe forever.
So I send out the notification emails, but I kind of already know what I'm deciding. Why? Because I want the other response to be a No. That says it all. So Monday comes, and....
I'm signing with JAMIE!!!!
Yes, this one is ACTUALLY me. ;)
Why? Because she loves my manuscript, and didn't even notice how frighteningly long it is while she devoured it. Because I know that she'll stand in my corner and back not just this YA novel, but whatever genre my little brain comes up with next. She's exactly the person I want not just for this book, but for the career ahead of me. Oh, and she's a mil spouse too!
Now begins the squee-fest on both sides of the phone. Hers, because I guess she's been waiting a wee bit to offer for me, and has been biting her nails, and me because... HELLO! I have JAMIE!
So maybe this will sink in tomorrow... I have an agent! This is my dream-job, and I couldn't be any more thrilled with life than I am at this very moment. Especially since Jason made it home yesterday and was here to celebrate with me!
